cv joint... axle, wheel bearings... ???

i thought it was a possible break rub last night, when i was out cruising around, however today upon leaving work to go run an errand the slight rub noise got louder, turning into more of a "grind", dependant on speed, seems to sort of be effected by steering but not dependent on it, straight, cruising, when braking or accellerating not noticable, noticable clunk inside wiht windows closed, can feel it in steering very mildly, clunking if crusiing while riding brake... i'm on stock rubber with 17000 KM, anybody have any idea's what the culprit is, and what i should be looking at?

Sounds like a bad wheel bearing to me. Usually, the noise is louder when turning one way when the weight of the car is shifted onto the bad part. Grinding, vibration, rubbing sounds are all indicative, as is dependence on speed.

However, it could be the CV as well. That usually has a clicking/clunking when turning one way more than the other. I've never had one grind, but I'm sure that's entirely possible.

Check the CV boots for damage/leaks. If they look good, pull the front wheels and check the hubs for grease splatter. (This is visible on some cars, not on others. I'm not an RL expert. I'm only going on general automotive knowledge.)

Or, I could be completely wrong and one of your brake pads has dislodged itself (or broken in two, as was the case w/ mine.)

Regardless, it doesn't sound like something you want to be driving on. Hope this helps.

well saturn has had it all weekend, they will be looking at it monday morning, and calling me ... i'll update when i hear back from them. if it is the wheel bearing i'm laughing, if its not, i might be waiting for parts, not sure if they would have the RL specific parts in or not (i'm assuming with the specialized driveshafts the rest is a bit different too.)

Sounds like a bad rear tranny mount.

I had one, I had almost exactly the same issues..

arg.

got it back. never ever would have guessed... and i checked this? .... i feel like a complete moron to be honest. According to their tech the lugnuts on that wheel were finger tight... and 2 of them were freewheeling. I tighten the shit out of my lugnuts though (after I had a kid work on my mustang in motor-mech class, and i almost had a wheel fall off) ... anyways, noise is gone... i'm very confused. also got them to book me in to get my bumper fixed and repainted, damn scratches (they are putting on some rubber bumpers, and i have a TSB bulletin # for the scratch issue, PM me if you need it.) as well... i got my annual service inspection done... charge is 105 cdn. when i got back they said they do oil changes with it, and since its a redline it will come to a total of 170~ .... well, needless to say the oil change was a suprise, seeing as i had one done not 3000 km before now... and on their service board its not listed... i was going to just ask for a discount (maybe 30-40 bucks?) but before i could relaly say more she said she'd just charge me the 105 and we are good... well, sweet definitley makes me like my dealership a bit more. plus my satty dealership will install stage 1 for me and can order it, dont need stg 2 as i have a pulley.

--- if you dont want to read all that plz read this ---
on the printout for my wheel balance, my front left (previously rear left) the tire itself is slightly "out of spec" now i havent noticed any adverse effects, but the girl on the phone telling me about my car mentioned it and she wasnt sure what they were going to do about it, they didnt say anything when i picked up the car, should I be pushing for them to replace the tire? i'm thinking so ... but not positive. I think i'll just get more info when i take my car in next week for new paint.
