something in the tranny.. like your syncros, or speed gear.. you prolly kicked the crap out of your 1st gear cone clutch and mabey beat up some teeth on the speed gear.. idk tho.. if it drives semi-normal then you should be ok.. you must of really forced it on their to hit 1st instead of 3rd

I would think that the high RPMs shot a lot of hot gasses out. My cat fried out the first week I had the car. Some others have had problems with it too.

A bent valve will not necessarily show up on a normal compression test. I had a Toyota Land cruiser at the shop that the computer was picking up a misfire on it. I did a comp test on it, and they all checked good. Did it with the engine running, and went from 150psi to about 40psi on a couple of cylinders. Did a leakdown, and it was leaking bad through the intake valves. You would have to do it with the engine running, and check each cylinder. You also could do a leakdown test to see if it is leaking past the valves or it can also be leaking between cylinders at the head gasket. The likelyhood of the cat getting destroyed from an over rev is pretty small. The rotten egg smell is perfectly normal and is not a sign of a cat going bad. They all smell like that especially if the fuel has a high sulfur content. The easiest way to check to see if the cat is the problem is to take the o2 sensor out of the manifold, leave it plugged in, and drive the car. It will be loud as hell, and the cel might come on, but the car should run a lot better. That is the easiest way to check, unless you have an exhaust backpressure tester.

Ill 2nd the short trip with the manifold O2 sensor out, sounds like a bad cat to me as well.

8 year, 80,000 mile warranty on the cat

I'd wait till Wop sees it and responds too, but a valve sounds like a good possibility. Just be glad you didn't throw a rod or something....

Gosh, that's gotta be HUGE rpms... if that's all you did, that's a stout block right there...

so my question, is stuff like this covered by warranty, or would they consider it to be abuse? (i have no idea if this sorta stuff is 'proveable' when you tear down the engine). obviously it could change from tech to tech, but what kinda support could you have to saying that it was 'your fault'?
