Occassional Rattling from the engine bay

Occassionally when I sit at idle, I get this metalic kind of rattle. I have no idea where it comes from or why it does it. Sometimes when I tap the accelerator it stops, other times it doesn't...in the latter case, it usually stops after I start driving for a few seconds and does not come back. It almost has kind of a pining sound to it. Anyone have any idea what the problem could be? I have heard that spacers that connect the s/c rotors can get oblong holes worn out and cause rattling, but I figure if that were the case, it would do it all the time at idle. This is only occassionally. I cannot get it to it often enough to have Saturn find something wrong.

There's a TSB about the tranny noise. Most likely, that's what you're hearing.

Yeah I think I have the same issue. Doesn't have affect on driving or anything like that though... It might be the tranny I have no idea. Thought it sounded like something was lose. But after I got out of the car I couldnt pinpoint the sound.

It sounds like something is REALLY loose. Saturn offered to rebuild my tranny w/ the fix, but I just don't trust a Saturn dealership rebuilding a Saab transmission.

From what I understand, it's harmless. And if it's not... well... it hasn't broken yet.

Yeah, same with me...doesn't cause any problems, but also cannot nail down the source. Interesting...a tranny issue? What exactly would the issue be?

Yep, if its not broken don't fix it. But if its so annoying that its causing you to get mad... then you have to try to get some sort of fix for it.

No idea what in the tranny would be causing the noise. Sure seems odd though, even if the problem is not harming anything.

no, I don't think it is the hood prop, but worth another look.

I have the gear rattling sound I think most of us have. Could that be what you're talking about?

I usually hear it when engine braking in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. Once you start accelerating again, no more noise.
