Limp Mode....Why?

So yesterday i was thinking how i havent herd the power of my car in a while so when sitting at a u turn i diced to rev it up a bit a civic next to me revs up a bit to so i do it a little more taking it to the limiter and then bam it just shut down, not completely off though the check engine light came on as well as the limp mode light. I made the turn slow as hell and pulled over to the side of the road and turned the car off and waited like 2 mins turned it back on it was still there, so i drove a little more with old people doing 30 passing me well my foot was down to the floor. Pull into a gas station and turn the car off again, this time for like 5 mins turn it back on and still the same problem, some guy comes over and tells me its sowns like i lost a couple clyinders i tell him about the limp mode and then drive to my house the car sat for about 10 mins and then i started it this time it fired right up. I was just currious as to why it dropped it into limp mode

Well first of all limp mode is there to protect the engine. Its telling you to back off in otherwords. Secondly the RL doesnt really like to rev while in neutral especially all the way to redline and beyond. Third when it happens you don't just turn the car off, you have to remove the key from the ignition.

the RL will do this MOST times you rev it to redline in nuetral... NEVER do this in this car EVER EVER EVER

Or maybe it's the car's way of saying "Wrong hole! Wrong hole!"
