Exclamation Window scratches

I just noticed today that in the middle of the driver's door window that there is a deep scratch in the glass (on the inside). With the window all the way up, it starts halfway up and goes down towards the door. Anyone ever had experience as to why this is? It's obvious something inside the door gouged it at one time. I'm going to take it to the dealer Monday and see what the deal is and what they are going to do to fix it.

You're on the right track. Have the dealership check it out. You got something rubbing the glass. I have a less serious problem with my passenger window. My tint has a buff/rub mark going from the base up to midpoint on the film across the entire width of the window. It appears to be a rough seal or something. I'm waiting to have it repaired until closer to the end of the warranty period. Then they can repair the door and retint the glass.

(tinted windows). and they look absolutley horrible. thats one of the reasons i have mine down alot. but yeah i supposed it was from just somethin rubbing from rolling up and down all the time, but yeah mine look terrible. i dont wanna redo them and it happen again, so maybe ill take ur alls advise and get it look at to see whats rubbin.

My passenger side window has a nice deep scratch on it. I'll have to check out that TSB...That should mean they should replace the window if it's scratched

Does anyone else seem to have a TON of nicks on their front windshield that don't seem to go away, even after a thorough cleaning? On my windshield, there a waaaay too many little nicks that glimmer in the sun that seem to be under the surface of the glass. So they don't go away after washing the car or windexing the glass. It's really really annoying to look through, and this is the only car that I've noticed it in....

Here's the TSB I was referring to (see below) and appears to apply to the 2004 models only
Problem is they dont really acknowledge any issue other than when using aftermarket tints, but IMO it could (and does) scratch the glass as well. On a case by case basis some dealers MIGHT replace your glass and install the new seals if you're still under the terms of your warranty but it still could be considered as "Goodwill" if your OFF warranty. Especially if you had it listed as a concern on a past warranty repair order and it's since gotten worse.

As far as the windshield pitting is concerned most are "sand blasting" affect from gravel roads or dusty conditions combined with high winds OR possibly a known chemical drop outs from acids used in some car washes and glass cleaners that wernt correctly neutralized after cleaning. Doubt you'll get much satisfaction there unless there is a true manufacturing defect within the glass can be established, which is difficult to do.

Subject: Aftermarket Window Tinting Scratched or Torn (Replace Side Door Window Inner Sealing Strips) #03-08-64-038A - (10/01/2004)

Models: 2003-2004 Saturn ION Vehicles with TeflonŽ Coated Side Door Inner Sealing Strips

Built Up To and Including VIN Breakpoint 4Z216369

Attention: Fixed Operations Manager, Parts Manager, Technician

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This bulletin is being revised to add VIN breakpoint information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 03-08-64-038 (Section 08 -- Body and Accessories).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Condition
Some customers may comment that the aftermarket window tinting is scratched and/or torn.

Cause
The side door inner belt sealing strips are manufactured with a TeflonŽ coated strip instead of a flocked strip. With the addition of aftermarket window tinting applied to the inner surface of the glass, the interface between the tinting, debris, and the TeflonŽ coated strip may scratch or tear the tint.

Correction
Replace all side door inner belt sealing strips with the new design service parts which now contain flocked material. Refer to "Sealing Strip Replacement - Front (SI Document ID #882749) and Rear (SI Document ID #882760) Door Window Belt Inner" procedures in the Doors subsection of the Body and Accessories section of the 2003 or 2004 Saturn ION Service Manual, Vol. 3. See the Parts Information section of this bulletin for part numbers of new design side door inner belt sealing strips.

Service Procedure
Replace front door inner belt seals on both front doors. Refer to "Sealing Strip Replacement - Front Door Window Belt Inner" procedure in the Doors subsection of the Body and Accessories section of the 2003 or 2004 Saturn ION Service Manual, Vol. 3.
For ION sedans, replace rear door inner belt seals on both rear doors. Refer to "Sealing Strip Replacement - Rear Door Window Belt Inner" procedure in the Doors subsection of the Body and Accessories section of the 2003 or 2004 Saturn ION Service Manual, Vol. 3. This step does not apply to ION Quad Coupes (rear door glass is stationary).

Mine's an '06. Either way, they're biting the cost. They were the ones who tinted the windows too. I bought the car brand spankin' new and upon delivery it was tinted and they told me I had to pay for it because all their cars come tinted when they sell them. So they can replace the tint and find out what's messing it up to begin with.

Interesting with the chemical reactions. I've only taken my car through a drive thru wash a couple of times in 2.5 years, so I doubt that's it. The window cleaner I use may be a cause. This isn't really an issue I'd take into the dealer and complain about....I guess I was just seeing if anyone else has noticed this with their glass.
