Transmission Busted All By Itself?

My car has been fine recently, no troubles or signs of anything happening... then I went to the gym on Saturday and parked it... came out about 2 hours later, and when I was backing out of the spot it took a couple of attempts before it would go into reverse; the shifter went all the way down but the gear would not engage. After finally backing it out it went into 1st fine.

Once I pulled onto the street, it popped out of second. I put it in third, it went a few feet and popped out of third. At this point, I could not put it in any gear. The shifter was moving freely around in any direction and there were no gates, not even the reverse lockout was activating. It just felt like a pile of mush.

I was able to get it off the road with my momentum and had it towed to the dealer. I was assuming it was a shift linkage cable that broke somehow... today the dealer calls and says the whole trans is shot, and they are ordering a new trans which might come in Wednesday... when they get the trans they will begin investigating how this could have happened. Does this sound possible? I'm not sure what could have happened to my trans to ruin it to the point of needing replacement... especially since it was sitting in a parking space for 2 hours, off. Any ideas... could they have just not done a good job checking to see what was wrong? Or could the tranny really just bust apart while sitting around untouched?

Sounds to me like it could be your shift pins, but I'm no expert. Had a similar thing happen in a different car.

Yeah, I've been w/o a car for 7 months because I have no warranty. Is your car an 04 because in 05 the trani's had a few revisions because they made the 04's like shit. I downshifted my car hard, but not screw up a trani hard, racing a wrx & blew my clutch up because, & I am assuming because nothing is broken inside, that the shift tree that shifts the forks into gear had too much play in it & got cockeyed in there, therefore freezing the trani, therefore breaking the weakest point, the clutch. When I took it apart I found nothing broken, but it wasn't shifting. I took it apart & put it back together & it's shifting fine now, but I'm not going to put it back in for fear it will just happen again & blow up the $1200.00 exedy I just put in. So here I sit saving for a brand new lsd trani. I miss my car.
