How to take out Thermostat???

I know it's at the upper radiator hose.
And it looks like you have to take off the valve cover to get the thermostat out? Is this correct?

Or is there an easier way?

I need to take it out to flush my cooling system of the sludge. I found out the Prestone Super Cleaner will break down the sludge. I bought some and put it in a cup and swooshed it around and it breaks it down. Which is good news because I think I can save my whole system now.

But the down side is I still don't know if it's the oil cooler or head gasket yet.
I havn't touched the car since sunday really and I will only get about an hour with it today. So wish me luck.

It's a gigantic pain in the ass. I don't think you need to take the valve cover off, but you need to disconnect every hose from it.

Wait where the heck is it then???

In the back of the engine, about a couple inches below the top of the valve cover, driver's side. There's 4 bolts but good luck getting to them all. I gave up after the third one because I knew there was no way I was reaching the last one without a lot of work.
