Shifter problem?

I raced an SRT4 tonight and discovered something. This was the first time I pushed my 05 RL to redline. In first gear I accelerated to redline, felt it hit the rev-limiter, then proceeded to shift in to second. However, it didn't want to go into second. In other words, it felt like there was no second gear to shift into. I also did a roll from second gear and it did the same thing when I tried shifting in to third. When I shift just before redline/rev-limiter it seems to be just fine. Is this some safety thing in all of the RL's or does my car have a problem?

I notice that to when I went from my cavy to the RL (different glide path, different touch needed, etc) but I got use to it after awhile by just going WOT often (tires my beg for mercy and your gas bill goes up, but its fun) and the torque brace helped me as well (in my mind anyways, don't know if it actually did anything, but since it stops the engine and by association (via bolts) the transmission from moving, it should help).

It seemed pretty consistent. So either I'm not shifting right, or it just won't shift if it's bouncing off the limiter. The only thing I can do right now that I know of to prevent it from happening is to shift just before redline.

It's always good to shift before redline rather than crashing into it ...lol, but I know what your saying, I did the same. Mainly in 1st with the tach laggin about 500rpm behind (when flooring it) and my cavy never had a tach, so I'd watch it and BAM, the car would hit a wall of nothingness. Soon I learned not to trust the tach (in 1st) but to go back to the sound of the engine (like I did in the cavy). Now I use a combo of sound and the tach. Everyone has their own way, I like to go by pedal feel, engine sound, and using the tach for a general reference.

yeah, get used to the feel of the car.

i generally don't even look at my tach, just play with the stick and the pedals. sometimes i look over to make sure i'm not too high in RPMs for gas mileage, but aside from that, i like to keep my eyes on the road when i drive her hard.

get a shift light if need be

Same thing happened to me: first off you can't bring 1st gear to redline and get second you need to bring it right before redline and shift into second. As far as 2nd to 3rd is concerned I know exactly what your going through. Just drive you car alot and keep trying that shift and it will break in. It sucks when your racing cuz noone believes that you lost because your car wont let you shift. Just find a road that is deserted in your town and keep racing from a 20 roll by yourself. You and your car need to learn each other and you'll be fine. I havent gotten locked out of a gear in a long time. But trust me I know how pissed you are

I bought my RL Aug 2, and only recently have begun to feel very confident in driving it. Not only was it my first stick, having driven others since then, I see how touchy it is.

Not going WOT right off the line in 1st helps. Modulate the clutch and throttle until the tires hook up, just barely before wheel hop. Then you can go WOT and prepare to shift. Keep your ears open and listen. It has the same sound right before red line.

Also, you'll notice if you goose the throttle while cruising, you can generally pop the car out of gear w/o clutch. I've learned to do this while accelarating in 1st, 2nd...any gear, really. Get a nice off the line go, hit WOT, listen for red line...then off throttle, pull out of 1st and move toward 2nd even AS I'm tapping the clutch...and by the time the shifter's reached the gate for 2nd I'm on the clutch and it slips right in. I'm sure this has a specific name, I just don't know what it is. If you're really fast, you can get out and in gear w/o clutch at all...but I'd worry about learning the clutch first

As for races, I experienced the same thing. Easy to master 2nd drops at 40, hard to master dig launches. I pulled on a WRX a few weeks after getting my RL, from a 40 roll. Then we went from a dig. I was so nervous I slipped the hell out of my clutch and lost horribly.

You'll learn

Half assed speed shifting there SLS. I do it on my bike all the time..I almost never use the clutch for upshifts, but I do for downshifts. Too bad you can't airshift a car.....
