Just wondering about the clutch..

I've worked on pretty much all of my own cars (seeing as how we used to race and still do race bikes) so it's not as if I'm incompetent about this, but I was wondering how hard the clutch would be to change on the RL and what steps would be needed? If I can just buy the clutch and save myself the money from having someone else do it, I'd rather go that way, but I've never changed the clutch in a FWD car..it's always been RWD. If anyone has any pointers please lemme know and it'd be very much appreciated.

let me just say this... i've replaced an entire tranny in our redlines once... it was no fun by anymeans.. the clutch is not much better... it's a full weekend job.. and if your going in their do the flywheel too.. cause once you finish your not gunna wanna go back in for a while

let me see if i can find you a PDF

ooked into it more.. and for this one it's gunna be a good one... you have 2 ways of changing it... the GM way says you completely remove the tranny and then chnage the clutch assembaly... that way would be easy to change the clutch but a pain to remove and re-install the tranny... the other way is to just take out the bolts holding the tranny to the block.. seperate the tranny from the block slighty and then take the clutch out that way.. not sure on how much room you'll have to work with but it will most likely be easier that way.. WOP will have a better answer but those are really the only 2 ways.. both of which are very invloved

Obviously since I can't drive the RL right now anyway time isn't much of an issue to me. The only thing is I can't afford a flywheel right now anyway..just the clutch. I've said before that I had some mucho bills come at me suddenly (ie: Hospital) and I have to pay them off at the same time. I did find out some good information though, the RSM clutch will handle 350-400ft/lbs tq...
I'm really hoping to do it the separate->slide method rather than dropping the whole tranny.

Damn, are you gunna have enough room that way? Either way you're gunna have to take off the tranny mounts, driveaxles, and anything else in the way. So the only step between that and actually removing the tranny is disconnecting the electrical connectors. Just pull the tranny and save yourself a headache.

I don't believe it is any more difficult that RWD.

RWD was super simple..just split and drop.. Someone mentioned that on some of the Saabs they could just split and slide over and it'd have enough room..not sure if it'd work the same on the RL or not..the super bad thing is that I do not have a garage anymore since a tree took mine out..so I really do not have anywhere to be dropping the transmission. I've re-plated my old (non-modded) 944 and I'm driving that 'till I can even buy the clutch...shit just happens too quick these days it seems.

yeah matt thats what my guy did he just split it and slid it in i mean theres not a whole lot of room to do it but iyt can be done as for the flywheel you dont have to replace it you just have to have it resurfaced and thats no that bad price wise!

and I'd love to do that brew, but I cannot afford the extra $400 for a flywheel at the time..
