Grinding in 4th/5th

Hey all,

I've looked a little bit on the troubleshooting forums and haven't found a similar problem, so I figured I'd post one...

First off, I have a '05 RL with less than 3k miles, running 89/91 octane (depending on long distance vs. short distance driving), no mods whatsoever. I haven't really driven the car hard (racing, etc.) at all.

Now, the real deal. I tend to ride in higher gears when driving city... Just the way I was taught to drive... And in doing so, I have noticed a moderately loud, metal grinding like noise when riding 35-40 mph (1300-1800 rpm) in 5th gear. It is audible in 4th, but much, much more audible in 5th. I'm concerned it's a problem in the transmission, but considering I've had the car since the first mile was put on it, and I truly have not driven it hard, I can't understand why this would be the case.

Has anyone else noticed this problem / might have an idea what it could be?

TIA!

My Dad likes to drive like that too. It kinda annoy's me.

As for myself I dont notice any noise from the drivetrain unless I am near a building or wall with my window down. I am also usually in third at those speeds.

I think there was something awhile back about the gears accually touching each other. Wasnt that a TSB?

If they don't touch each other you don't move.

I used to get a grind if I was high in 1st or 2nd and skipped to 5th after the masacre was over. Ask yrethguad he tried it no matter what if you went 2nd to 5th it would grind. I think its a snycro thing.

Wait, are you talking about school? High in 1st or 2nd, skipping to 5th after the massacre... I don't remember a massacre in our school...
