Did you know?

Alright so I finally got pissed at the "marble in a tin can" noise today. I snoopped around and I'm sure a lot of you know this that It's DEFINETLY in the gearbox...this scares me. Because recently in first gear the gearbox has been making serious grinding noises. When im cruising at 20 mph in nuetral with the clutch in and push first gear into position without it locking it, it sounds as though the gearbox is winding up and i know thats whats happening but its SOO loud. I can hear it with the music on and even over my exhaust. I want to take it in but i have no idea what it is...anyone?

There was a thread about this a few days ago...I'll be taking my car in for it soon. The TSB has to do with rear rattle/noise while the car is cold.

That wind up sound going into first is normal. ]

But, that sound, if it's the one I am thinking about, there was a TSB about it and something about springs should be installed in the gearbox somewhere as a fix.

Have tolook and see if I can find it...

As far as grinding noise, don't know about that.

Here is a link to the TSB... But mine makes the sound even when warm, but goes away when the engine is under any load, or I press in the clutch...

its gear rattle due to engine harmonics. A Dual Mass Flywheel would have solved this on our cars but DMF's are heavy. Be happy we dont have one. The noise can be fixed by tsb but try to talk them into a lsd tranny for the swap

The wind up noise wound be the synchro matching the engine speed right? That's what I tell myself that it is anyway.

well then if its just the gearbox winding up, why is it so much louder in first than second where i can't even hear it wind up...and that griding noise can be heard when warm during deceleration. Like if i'm next to a median i can hear it reflect off.

There has been a TSB for the rattling noise in the gearbox for a very long time... take it in if need be...

So, you're rolling at 20mph in neutral, then you are trying to put it in first? If that is the case, I have owned many manuals, and it is very difficult for 1st to engage at that speed. Seems to me if it did let you it would put a lot of stress on the drivetrain, hence it won't do it. But maybe I'm reading your post wrong.
