Dan's Intro to HP Tuners:

Ok, so how long after you ordered HPT did it take for them to e-mail you your 'authorization key' or what ever it's called. I want to start peicing together my tune (dan/spoon hybrid) but the software wont open with out this key!

I just want to be able to get used to the interface before I flash it friday, so I don't kill my car. It wou;dn't be such a big deal if I didn't stumble on a link to download HPT, but now it just stares in my face on my desktop.. taunting me.

And agree with you saying it's a hobby. I find it really enjoyable. Not the power, just the expierence. I'm not going to rush through everything, because I enjoy it too much!

Ok heres whats gonna happen:

Ur gonna get the box..get all excited and start loading software

1hr later:
just got done hunting down the last updated beta and got it linked to the car

15min later:
after debating over whole model yr or 1 ull offload ur stock tune

10min later:
You will feel completely lost when u look at the tuning parameters

60 min later:
you made 3 changes but ur not sure of em and ur afraid to upload em

30min later:
U finally decide to upload it

1 min later:
Car runs omg!!!

30 sec later:
CEL city baby!!!

15min later:
U have no idea wtf is going on u get pissed and leave

20 min later:
after crying in ur room and to ur mommy u come on here and ask wtf am i doing.

10min later:
Spooner and Dan laugh at u

sometime the next day:
we prob decide to help

Dan

NICE STUFF!!!

15 minutes:
Open up the VE table in 3D mode and pretend like you know what the hell you are looking at. Also show your friends and spout off some bull shit about torque curves.

Or...Dan: "Hmm, okay, Jon, let's upload your tune." *Hooks into RL* *whistles*

HP Tuners: FAILED.

Dan: (inside thought, heart racing) Oh my God, Jon's going to kill me.

Jon: (inside thought) My car rocks.

Dan: (inside thought) Oh Jeez, oh no, oh crap.

Jon: *Hands in pocket, whistling* "How's it going man?"

Dan: *Heart attack* "Fine man, fine"

OK,

First Installment...Knowledge

I suggest the following books:

Maximum Boost: Designing and Testing Turbocharging Systems
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/083...733405?ie=UTF8

How to Tune and Modify Engine Management Systems
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/076...733405?ie=UTF8

also use the HPTuners forum for support:
http://www.hptuners.com/forum/

For those of you who wonder about COT and Piston Protection see here:
http://www.hptuners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6983

Lastly I'm going to cover Fuel Injectors (I'm going to be trying a few different way to tune for em in the next few weeks), Spark Tables, VE and SD (when I get some time to actually SD Tune), Boost Management, PE adder, etc. The only thing I may not be able to cover at first is the TQ based style of the 06 models.

Dan

Read these books. They explain a lot of basic engine theories and go into detail about sensors and how certain oem systems work. They will greatly expand your knowledge of the boosed internal combustion engine.

All great resources! The author of Maximum Boost also writes a book called "Supercharged"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/083...e=UTF8&s=books

Also, I have the the tq based management on my car... I'll see if I can write up an explanation, but the measurement units are strange to me.

These books were also recommended I plan to look into them as well:

Well, my car, Rice's, Tibbets, and the '06's have a torque based system of limiting power. The PCM determines how much power the motor should be making based on key parameters and then checks against a table to see if the car is allowed to make that much power. If it's not, it pulls timing, closes the throttle plate, or other things to limit power.

In the '04s and apparently most of the '05s, there is a boost (MAP sensor) controlled style of tq management. Instead of determining how much power the car is making through an equation, it looks at how much boost it's making, and then flutters the Eaton's bypass valve to stay at or below that power range. It also can pull timing or close the throttle plates though.

The nice part about the tq based setup, is that it can adjust itself for different weather and altitude, etc... or that's the theory anyway.

Yes it is...and if you're interested, join up with CFLRA and buy into the shared HPT program, and you too can "have fun". (Check out the Florida section for info)
