Custom wireharnesses?

Part of my engine bay project is to clean up all the wiring and tubing running in there. I know no one makes any custom engine bay harness for my car and since I have an extra one laying around already I though I would try to get another spare and make my own. This is a DD so I would take the two spares and solder them together as I run the wiring where I want it to run. I do not see this as being a problem but I wanted to pick everyone's brain to see if I might run into any issues.

how about pay for the car, before you go and make a custom wire harness

I would not reccommend soldering any wires together! everytime you make a break in a wire you lose some amount of power. this could effect some of the components in the car or even throw a DTC if the car thinks something is not holding stable or enough voltage. If you want to make a custom harness your best bet is to start from scratch. Remember that Power does not run through wire. Rather it travels accross wire so the more strands of wire you have per wire the better the power will be passed though. Thats why Power cables for amplifiers and such have thousands of small strands of wire and not just a few big ones. You can pick up GM Universal Wire harness's that are just color coded spools of factory wire that you can cut to any lenght. lots of custom hot rod and chopper guys do Harness'e all the time. And anyone of them would tell you the least amount of breaks in the wire the better.

The problem is buying the connections to plug into the compants and the ECU.

if you actually look at the back of harness connector the wires/pins are easily removed and you can purchase new pin that crimp to wire and plug into the connector piece. (i have personally used this to overide the Pioneer avicd3 in car dvd) so if you have an extra harness you can do this mod without haveing any down time on your vehicle and when you finish it will be plug and play. a buddy of mine has an 87 cj5 jeep that needs a new harness and they dont make a plug and play aftermarket harness for it so we read up on it on a blog and they recommended this same technick. (to make a custom harness that is)

ahh... but you forget, some sensors are wired for a certain resistance. Changing wire diameters on sensor components can cause them not to read properly.

IMO, GM didnt spend a few million dollars designing a sh-tty wireing harness.

the only time you would need a custom harness, was if you were running a complete standalone system.

I did not think of the resistance. The reson I am doing a custom harness is cause I need to move the PCM and want to clean the engine bay up. If I have two wireing harnesses and solder them together that should keep the same resistance right? Or even use a butt connector.
