well after all that talk about the 05, how the tranny wasnt letting the engine "engage" fast enough....my friend borrowed his girlfriends stock 98 gtp. we both lined up...its about 15-20 degrees out, so most of you know how bad my launch was, his wasnt to much better, but it was, he got about 1-1.5 cars on my and it about stayed that way. so i pulled up next to him and said lets go from a roll since i cant launch, so we went about 25, i dropped it into second and we stayed even til about 70 n i started to pull n he left off. so all in all, im thinkin a pre 04 gtp is about the same as our cars. But im sure i could get about a car on him when the weather warms up.

Good kill!! I beat a 99gtp 2dr with some stuff done to it. I met him thru work and he said my car sounds slow and and all i had was the well-fare intake. All i said is that i scoots when it has to.Im sure im a lil bttr at launchingand have bttr weather too, but i ate em. he had the tration control on i kept a good 2 cars on him entering 3rd. the tipical excuse was blah blah blah bull shit. B4 we even staged he said i didnt stand a chance and that 60hp is a big diffrence between mine and his. I also walked his friends monte ss w/the 3800series blower just not impressed w/the other supercharged cars out ther. Im proud to say Saturn Made this car realy well.
Hahahahaha!!!

I LOVE when people talk shit about our cars because they're Saturns only to get beat when it's taken to the pavement. :D

Then, the excuses come flyin' at ya.

"I missed a gear"
"I had my traction control on"
"I spun all the way through 2nd"
"I hit the rev limiter"

and the list goes on.................

I love when people say that kind of stuff. So you are saying that you are just a bad driver? Oh ok, glad we got that out of the way.
while they were rillong Adam kept up even, but from a STOP, The GTP beat the ION. We ran it before, the stock GTP ran a 14.58 @98.7mph. Not sure what the 1/4mile RL time is, but the Neon SRT4 runs a 13.9. What is the official 1/4 mile time for the RL?
Speaking of spinning, in 2nd do u have that prob?
major spin in second. i could have easily spanked the gtp, but i couldnt hook up in first, and half of second. and by the time i was in second, the gtp had traction and took off.

YOU BOTH HAD TRACTION PROBLEMS!, if HE had traction it wouldn't even had been a race, more like follow the leader. Unless your ION runs a 14.5 or lower, IT IS NOT FASTER THAN THE GTP. PERIOD> no matter how you sugarcoat it.

Dude, I've beaten two GTP's already. First one was a friends. '99 I think and completely stock. I smoked his ass from a stop. Second one was just some dude I met up with on the road. I know he had aftermarket exhaust at the least. We started from a 55mph roll and I maintained at least a car length on him the entire time to about 115.

No sugarcoating here.
HAHA good kill! People still think GTP's are gods (Roln19's) they havent seen the REDLINE's in action yet. Some times you just have to show people. NIce job man. Keep up the good work
james if you saw how much i spun compared to sam, you would know what i am talking about when i said that. we both spun all the way through first, sam got traction, -- i didnt. then i continued to spin half of second while he was gone. ill admit, i wont be able to SPANK the gtp, but i will beat it in nice weather no questions about it, and if you want we'll put money on it.

Well, they're not gods, but we do have our fun with them.

I'd like to see some Redlines in action around here, but I've never seen any show up at the track. In fact, the only forced induction Saturn I've seen at the track around here is a first gen SC2 with a L67 (SC 3800) stuffed into it.

I wish someone would bring one out, I think they're a pretty nice car. Comfy seats, too.

I'd change one thing, though. Use the 2.2 and put the SC on it. Why they didn't, I have no idea.

LOL Dude the ony way you beat out a 97+ GTP was if the other drivers were asleep at the wheel or launched terribly. I'm not dissing the RL at all, but the numbers are just not there to justify it.

Supercharged.

I have nothing to gain by lying here. I have beaten two GTP's.

Why is it so hard to believe? You act like I'm claiming to have beaten a Z06 or 911 or something.

My friends was an auto tran. The other guy I raced, I have no idea what year his GTP was but he stayed within a car length behind me the entire time.

I can attest to the "I had my traction control on" excuse. On the Regal GS or Grand Prix GTP, if you spin with traction control it, it pulls timing and MAJORLY slows you down for the remainder of the run. With it off, it actually lets you either continue spinning or just lets you take off like a SOB.

i've taken one already as well, they are boats, but i assume it was stock, but yet so was i at the time...
I say if you are a good driver and good at shifting, you should beat a GTP with not too much problem. All GTP's are automatics..one reason i would never get one. I say if you lost to one then you had more wheelspin than you wanted (always a factor), but true numbers dont lie. I say they are about equal.
I agree, nice way to put it without any body getting upset. Allot of people here are very easly ruffled.
They can get ruffled all they want. The fact remains that I have beaten two of them. Whether or not bad driving is the reason, I don't know, but a win is a win. :D

GTPs have a touch more torque (240 ft/lbs and up depending on the year)than you do and as you say, automatic. Spin is a major concern for us with the traction control disabled... more so than for you, I'd wager. ;).

As far as you spanking a GTP, there are only 3 ways that would ever happen:

1- The GP driver sucked so bad it was sad.
2- The GP was in need of some serious maintenance.
3- The GP driver wasn't racing but you thought he was.

My 4-door family sedan ran 14.7 hot off the street and 14.3's stock all day at the track after a 45 min cooldown (granted it was a cool day). 0-60mph times were publically stated as being 6.6 but in reality were closer to 6.3. 2-door GPs (lighter and quicker than the sedans) could be made to break deep into the 13's with as little as 3 mods... a catback, cold air intake and a smaller S/C pulley. Total cost: under $500.

Thats all with a car that weighs a good 800+ pounds more than the Ion.

Ions are a nice car, something I would buy a teenage son or daughter. The word performance and Saturn Ion don't belong in the same phrase. Granted most people think the same for the GP. I enjoy changing their minds. :D

JPK, where in Texas are you? I'm from Montreal Qc, but am going to Texas in a few weeks. I'd love to arrange a meet between a few of the slower local GPs there and your Ion. I'll bring the video cam.
