I know this subject has been mentioned here a few times, and at other Saturn/RL forums as well. I recently read a thread at saturnspeed.com where someone claimed the RL tach lagged behind his light tach by something like 1200-1400 rpm, showing 4900 when he was really at 6200 rpm... he further states that his 1/4 mile times have improved measurably using a programmable shift light tach.

I was wondering if others here had similar experiences... just how slow to respond is the RL tach? Going WOT, where would you plan to shift based on the stock tach reading? I'm starting to shift at 6000 and have managed to avoid the rev limiter.

I shift at the limiter.....kinda get used to how the engine sounds right before you hit it. And I have found that it's about 500-600 rpms behind....
It got better in mine after the first software update, it used to redline around 6,000 on the tach. Now it runs up REAL close, maybe 6300 or so, then it bings off the limiter.

I shift from first to second RIGHT after 6K. After that, it seems I can shift without hitting the lim around 6400 in all other gears though. For some reason, it seems that first gear lags the worst. Or maybe it's because you are moving up the tach so much faster in first.
