I hit 3004 miles on my Redline today and changed the oil. Royal Purpol Synthetic. It came to about $55 doing it myself. The filter wasn't even bad taking out. All i did was take off the 2 10mm bolts off the antifreez filler and it gave me enough room to pull it out. Better then the $83 my dealer said it would cost after tax. I saw if you have changed oil on a car before this one isn't any harder just takes a little more finece.

Costs 14 bucks more to go to the dealer

If you bring your own oil its only like 14-16 bucks for them to do the work, and put your car in the air and inspect it while they give you the lube job. They also have a better tech who does all the supercharged cars at the dealership by me, so I figure its worth the 14 bucks to talk cars with the folks at the dealership while someone else does all the dirty work.

The technicians are also valuable for finding out what you can do to your RL without voiding the warantee.

They really dont mark up the filter much since a FRAM is 8 bucks or so and the saturn filter is actually less.

I will prally do my own too. At 2900 so its getting close.

What is the part number for the filter?
Does K&N make a filter for our car?

Is there only one drain plug or two? 5.0's have two thats why I ask.

Thanks!

One drain plug. K&N doesn't make a 2.0L specific filter that I know of.

If you go to Autozone and look in the index guide they have the 2.0 S/C engine listed in there under '04 Ion and you can get the numbers for them. I've done two oil changes and used a Fram and then an STP oil filter.

Just got my 2nd oil change monday. Had a gift certificate so it cost me 60. Still a lot, but it will have to do til i learn how to change my own oil (and find the time for it).
Just out of curiosity, when did your change oil lights come on? I'm at 3k and wondering when it's going to come on. And if it didn't, why have you changed the oil twice? Just wondering, thanks.

According to the manual, it will sense, depending on driving condtions etc. when the oil should be changed. It's not necessarily going to be every 3K.

I did my first change at 2900 and the second at 7100. No light either time. I'm gonna change mine about every 5-6K regardless if the light comes on or not.

This is what I have asked several people several times with no response. Why are so many people changing their oil every 3k miles? Every 5k seems right. If you are going to do it and ignore the light, I would say every 5k if it hasn't come on yet.

I am changing at 3,000 miles. I feel more comfortable knowing that the oil is new and there isn't something happening.
i've always changed the oil in my cars every 3000, and won't stop now, the change oil light is just a dummy light, it doesn't even sense if the oil is low, only checks driving conditions, i don't trust it.

synthetic or not, a performance car like this should have the oil changed every 3000 if you're going to drive it hard

I did mine at 5000. I think with the snythetic there is no reason to do it more often. Not to mention that the waste oil is not good for the environment. Just my 2 cents.
Synthetic Oil is, just that, Synthetic it does not waste oil. Now a Sythetic Blend mixes Sythetic and regular Oil together. But, no one should be running that.

What? It takes energy and products to create synthetic too. Whether it is synthetic or not I think his point is that it is a waste to replace your oil if your car isn't telling you to. And I agree. And the dealership does too. Not that that is really worth a whole lot.

I will try to say this very nice and don't take me wrong on this. I have been told by several mechanics that in a normal asperated car that would be fine you can get 10000 before a oil change on snythetic. But since we have the supercharger, it adds alot of stress and wear on the engine in a short explanation. So it should alway be replace at 3000 miles. Even my dealer said GM recommends 3k miles. Of course a dealer always wants that extra buck, thats why I ask a few mechanics.

jsut a fyi guys and gals, i did a research paper on oil and filters and found that oil such as mobil 1 does not break down in a n/a car till about 10,000 miles with one filter change and what ever amout of oil to replace lost filter oil.
Thats what many of my friends on my other forum are doing now, waiting 7,000 to change the oil but replacing a filter at 3500 with a quart or so lost when changing the filter.
If anyone can get their hands on it, try to use schaffer oil, it is about the same cost as mobil one or a lil cheaper, but lasts much longer. They send out a pill looking canister that you send your old oil in to be analyzied, and they tell you how much copper, brass, alum is in the oil and where it came from. quality stuff
Oh and does anyone have pics of how to change the oil, i tear apart engines and build them, but i would like to know what to with a simple oil change. Later all Jay

i'd rather change my oil every 3000 with the oil still clean than change it when it starts getting dirty...
