Hello everyone. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but here it goes.

I stopped by the dealer today and had a lengthy conversation with the parts dept as well as corporate customer service. The Ion Redline Competition Package has been delayed until 2006. It will be a:

"PRODUCTION OPTION ONLY FOR 2006 MODELS AND WILL NOT AVAILABLE FOR ADD-ON TO EARLIER MODELS THROUGH SATURN"

This is the official word from Saturn that I recieved today, 15Apr05. I think the key words here are "through Saturn". So after market may still be an option. Of course this information is subject to change, and I know I wouldn't trust me. One can still hope. This is all the info I have.

probobly because they're not going to make any more Red Lines, that's my best guess, hopefully the LSD will see it's way into the Cobalts, but then again of course it will, it's chevy's sport compact baby, can't let it dissapoint now...

I waqs confused by this as well. Either they are not makeing anymore, or those who bought them are just crazy nuts and actually own Ion 1's and they are confused.

Either way, confusion abounds. I am just repeating what I was told. Remember that game "telephone", lol.

How much longer till they start to sell the '06 models? Is it really that much longer? I've seen a lot of companies sell 'next' year's models pretty early in the year.

September is the earliest I have ever seen the next model year.

That sucks! I talked to my dealier today, and he said my order for my competition package '05 was still in. We'll see what happens. I'm not going to order an '05 if i can't get the competition package, i guess i'll just wait until '06, which really sucks, bad. Hopefully i'll hear something from my salesman (who has been one of my good friends for 10+ years) and see what's up.

2006 models can be released at any time of the year before its model year. It all depends on how ready the company is to release it in stage of production and such. Ideally, the car company wants to release the next model year as early as possible so that they can fix all the bugs that people experience throughout the year. They want to have all the bugs worked out so that when JD Power sends out their big surveys in the fall (the ones that you see the results for), they'll want the lowest problems per hundred. Yes, my internship last year was pretty informative.
With that said, I have no idea when to tell you guys to expect them to release 2006s. It always varies. I'm sure you started seeing the new Equinoxes early last year (around Michigan you did at least). Those were 2005 model years that were released around April-Mayish 2004 I believe. It might not be likely to see 2006 RLs in dealers until the fall though, but I am just estimating. As soon as I am done with this semester in 2 weeks and have started my internship in 3 weeks time, I will be investigating into a few things with the RL. Hopefully I'll get in touch with a Saturn guy I worked with last summer to see if he knows what is going down.

Hope this helps

The model year changeover is early July for Saturn. That's when they will be for sale. They will usually build a few earlier than that as 'test mules'. My Dad informed me that a couple dozen 2006 IONs were built last week as a test, but will not be sold to customers.

I didn't hear about the delay until 2006, but I do know that NONE have been produced so far (for sale to customers, that is).

Production on the '05 Red Lines has resumed as of last week, though.

Well i just talked to the manager at my dealership today, and this is what he told me. According to Saturn the demand for the Competition Package has exceeded the amount they can produce for 05. So all orders placed after April will be delayed until later on in the year which will make them 06's. Each dealership group is allowed no more than one special order per month so when you ordered your Redline will determine wether or not you will have to wait for the 06's. Those that have secured their order before april will have their car sometime in the last week of may.

That makes alot more sense, but you'd think if they wanted the cash from us they'd back up the demand with supply.
Basic economics in action, huh?

I was thinking the same thing, GM is lossing money yet they have people waiting in line to buy cars that they aren't releasing in a very timely manner. Seems if they took some of their focus off of trucks and SUVs for a minute they'd be able to get enough Red Line Comp Packages and Cobalt SS's out to meet demand.
