Hey Guys!

Im trying to get a Ion redline. My parents are going to buy me a car... but I need to feed them some good reasons to get the redline over the 4 door ion (which i think is kinda ****).

1st off im 17 ... insurnace will be $204 a month .. which isnt bad considering i was quoted $207 for a Focus ZX3 and $227 for a impreza RS

2nd I NEED GOOD REASONS TO GET ONE .... they have a 2004 Silver Redline for $15k here with 6K MILES and I WANT IT! HELP ME

Reliableity ... room ... you know all the reasons a parent woudl wanna hear about this car!

THANKS A TON!

you can get me on AOL messanger at bmx5045

it's got the styling of a coupe, so you won't look like you're driving mom's grocery getter, yet the two suicide doors make it usefull like a 4 door, the trunk space is huge, it gets decent fuel economy, same as a lot of v6 cars. plastic body panels will keep rust away for the most part, also you won't be worrying about door dings. if you compare all the extras that come on a base model redline you're practically stealing the car for the same price as a regular ion, so resale value will be much higher than an average ion.

i had to convince the wife to let me get it, she wanted a car we could use to go camping and all that, and we've done it in the redline, carrying everything two people will need to camp in comfort in the RL.

good luck

I can testify to the body panels. I got hit by a deer. Yes I said I got hit by a deer, I didn't hit him he ran right into the side of the car and bounced off. I stopped to see what the hell happened and the SOB got up and looked at me than ran off. There was not even a scratch on the car. WOW!!!

Depending on where you live it can be an all year car. Michigan not so much. We got ten inches and the snow is still falling and the Redline is sidelined. Can't get it out of the driveway. (Good thing I have my 89 VW cabby that runs through snow like its nothing.)

If your parents were smart they'd research the Redline out for themselves and then opt out and not get you one. Sorry, I don't mean to be a *****. But we all remember being 17. To be 17 with a car that has this kind of power and speed capabilities just isn't that logical. You can be the best kid ever, straight A's, blah blah blah, but giving an unexperienced driver this kind of car is asking for trouble. I truthfully don't want to here I'm a great driver, you don't know me, I'm responsible excuses. That fact of the matter is you haven't been driving that long plain and simple, temptations get the best of us know matter if we are in our teens or forty's.

With that said, I'll try and help you. I like Vita's responses, sporty yet pratical with the rear suicide doors, also large trunk. Reliabilty such as drivetrain is good, tell them it has been used in the SAAB cars for years. Price compares to the regular Ion, and it is loaded with options not stripped...

Speaking as probably the only old fart dad on this site, I'll give you the same advice, I gave my own kids: Don't buy a new car until you have at least a year of solid driving experience. Sorry, but the stats don't lie: you will have at least one, minor,( hopefully), fender bender in that time. Get a big ,old, cheap, no payment, clunker for your first defensive vehicle, especially if you live in the snow belt. Then when you have that first vehicular disagreement, it won't be in your shiny, new, Redline! By the way, the RL is very safe in the snow, since IF you can drive it all with the stock tires, you WILL be going very slow and easy!! :p

Even though im only 18, i was still thinking the same thing. Might not be the best idea for a first car. My first car was a SL2 and i loved it! I did some stuff to it to make it my own of course, but it didnt matter to me to have a new car. Anyways back to topic. I have some friends around your age and it scares me what they would do with a car like mine.... Then again im very close to your age and i can honestly say i drive like a grandma, even with the redline.. So its a toss up. Good luck tho! You older guys chime in and help out us young'ns.

Well, I might be unpopular after this but, I am 16, the Red Line is my first car and is the only manual car I have driven.

Just be responsible when first learning how to drive and get a few months of getting used to the car before you start acting like an idiot.

Now, I did absolutely no convincing to get mine. My dad said I could get " A Saturn, A Saturn, or A Saturn" So I chose what one I wanted and he agreed. If not I was prolly going to get a Regular ION QC 3.

wheres barry he would be the best one on here seeing that he is a father that has one and all his lil childrens have them as well. Id wait for his repsonse. If I had this car at 17 I would have lost my licence at 17 and a half. Great car ton of power and room. Too much power at this time for ya. Sorry though its a fun car get a ion3 and be happy with that.

I have been driving sience i was 14 ... i had a 2001 Rodeo and then my brother went to collage and doing the nice thing i gave him that seeing that the car he had (94 SL1) would die soon and i would get a new car. I am by no means a racer or anything like that ... hell i most of the time go 5 miles per hour under the speed limit ... im not an agressive drive in any means. But i can see where you all are comming from. My dad said he wants to get me a car now that will make it thru my last year of highschool here in KS and then i can take it to collage. Honestly i do not like ANY of the saturns but the Ion Quad Coupe ... I hate them all ... i love the looks of the red line ... i love the racing style seats ... the blue/black interior ... i could care less that it has the 200HP engine ... if it had a 140HP 2.2 L like the other ones i would be just as happy

Insurance on the 94 i drive right now is $130 a month ... $70 more isnt that bad considering the other cars my dad was looking at cost 227 and up

with that said ... anymore ideas?

I agree with this. For 11 years I was a quiet, calm driver in my 93 SC1. Now I have a Redline and everyone from my partner to family and friends are afraid to get in my car now. And I'm 41 years old.

However, help with your parents? I'm not quite sure what kind of advice these guys think they're giving. Any Ion would qualify over the Redline for what they're advising.

Here's the catcher that you're parents will want to hear:

The Redline looks more sporty and therefore, attracts more cops, so you'll be scrutinized to the point where you have no choice but to drive like grandpa in order to keep from being pulled over every day.

That should work.

If you don't care about speed and like the blue/black interior I would get a QC2 with the EFX ground effects package. The QC2 has the blue/black interior not racing seats buy it still looks cool. And your insurence will prob be around 150 or less a month. Just get some rims and lowering springs and it would look sweet.

Wow my first car I ever owned was a 70 Chevelle with a 454 completely worked and running about 600 to the wheels. But then again I was racing cars in figure 8 tracks since I was 13 so I may not be the best person to give advice. (lol)

when I turned 19 I bought my first car...the one in my sig
205hp stock for about a 2 months then I went to 230hp
then I took a 45 at 60+ racing a 3000gt went sideways a few times and went down in the ditch and back out lost my fog lamps and overheated :D
that was after having it for 9 months and having driven for a year before I got it.
raced so many times I need a new tranny now.

I was a granny driver for the first three months then the dogging started because it was mine and it had the power.

I'm 17 too...the redline is my first car and my first manual
It only took me two weeks to learn how to drive it and now I feel like I have great control over the car. To me, age doesn't effect the kind of car you get if you're responsible, safe, and feel like you are in control and can control the car at all times no matter the situation.

By the way, tell your parents that you would look like a nerd if you drove a 4 door ION!! That should be a good reason!!
