grrrr.....

check engine light came on this eve, and i was just driving about like any average sane person, kinda freaked me out when I saw it glowing there on the console,
only have 600kms on her so far too,
pulled over, restarted the engine just in case it was a glitch,
hmmm, check engine light still on...

popped the hood,

yep - engine is still there!
phew!!

oil level is good
fuel cap seems ok

guess I'll have to take a ride out to the dealer.....

me sad

I had a weird one, when i hit the power locks one day it shorted and blew the bcm fuse, which then the check engine light came on because a fuel purge code but the engine ran fine. Electrical systems can do some strange things.

Pull the negative cable for a few min, and reset the computer. If it comes back on, then take it in. I've had it happen twice. Once when I had to jump the car, and once when I changed the air filter, and when doing the K&N install. All 3 times it went right off.

saturn tech said it had 2 codes recorded

1 code was complaining about the emissions from the catalytic converter, or something like that,

and the other code was some kind of a communication error with the console and dash and stuff.

everything appeared to check out fine on the vehicle though.

they cleared or reset the codes.
told me it might be just a one time glitch and to bring it back if the light returns.

well
after 4 visits back to the dealer for the recurring cel,
i now have a new catalytic converter
All the richness of the early calibrations was pretty hard on the cat IMO
If you have a tailpipe puking chunks and leaving putrid black spittle everywhere you park- you cat is likely not long for this earth.

-Platinum
-Palladium
-Cerium
The cat's elemental composition should have a 1/2 life that would outlast a human lifetime many times over. But a wise old tech once told me...
"A catalytic converter never dies of natural causes, they are always MURDERED!!"

So when a cat fails prematurely, it almost always means something else is wrong. We may need to start a "kills" thread strictly for the cat. Hopefully the damage occurred in it's infancy and it's nothing chronic.
The good news is your cat is warrantied for 8 years/80,000 miles.

No way man... there's no way that a 5:1 A/F ratio kill the cat man... magazine racer... I killed a 3" Magnaflow and it took 4:1! ;)
