It seems like the Radar/Laser detectors would be a necessary evil type of spending considering how most of us drive the Red Lines. I wanted to start a thread for everyone to share their experience with various brands/models.

Hopefully we can hear about the top brands like Valentine One, Cobra, Escort, Whistler, can't think of any more right now. Personally, all I ever owned was years ago, a Radio Shack special that costed about $50. That things sucked ass, I would almost always see the cops before it goes off.

i have one, i use it daily.

mine works great and has saved me a few times, the problem is, allthough they are legal, if a cop see's one and you got stopped for speeding, they wont throw you a bone.

What kind do you have? Estimated range? I live at the border of Virginia/Maryland, they are illegal in VA, I just quit using it altogether, better than getting caught with one accidentally

I have the Escort Solo, which is cordless. I like the fact that it's cordless becuase I can put it up higher for better signal reception and not have a cord hanging in front of my face. I think the range on this thing is like a mile or something. I think when I got it it was close to $300, but well worth it in the tickets it has saved me from.

I have one, forgot the brand, but it is pretty nice. I have it hard wired so it comes on with the car. It is very compact and is above the rear view mirror. I have a dark tint strip also, therefore a police officer would never see it if he did pull me over. My friends never notice it until it goes off, then they are like wtf, where is it?

Radar detectors are nice. But laser detectors are only good for one thing, telling you that you have been taged. And alot of departments now have laser guns. The beam on a laser gun is so small that the only way it will go off it if the cop is tagging you from more than a mile away and you are the only one on the road. Laser is far more acurate and very precise. The odds of you picking up a signal that wasn't intended for you are slim. Or you are picking up something else entirely. And as for RADAR. Every thing in the freq range sets them off these days.

Personally I think it is a waste of money. But I am saying this from experience on the other side of the laser gun. However, I always get out of tickets because I know the system. Sometimes it just pays to be educated and certified about RADAR and LASER guns. Learn about those before you buy anything. You can't fight the enemy if you don't know what he has.

I use the Escort Passport 8500-X50... expensive but one of the very best. Has saved my arse many, many times... but you need to learn how to use it, when to slow down based on the radar detector picking up hits on other drivers further up the road because the K and Ka band instant on type radar (especially Ka) gives you virtually no time to react if you are the intended target.

I've been using Escort detectors since the very first Escort model, through the first Solo models, the early Passports, then the 7500 and now the 8500.

Dipolley is right about laser detection... if your detector picks it up that means you have been caught... it would be pure, dumb luck if you were not the target. Having said that, laser is much more difficult for the police to use... it is much harder to aim, must be resting on a steady base (no moving patrol cruiser), and the angle at which the beam must hit you is pretty close to parallel to the road direction of travel, otherwise readings are thrown off by the more severe angle that the light beam hits you. Laser is also pretty expensive compared to older, radar technology... many departments don't have the money to upgrade.

Check out the site http://www.escortradar.com/, including their page of reviews for the 8500 at http://www.escortradar.com/x50.htm and for the Solo at http://www.escortradar.com/solo.htm

Or you could just get a laser/radar jammer! These actually schamble the signal on its way back to the gun for a short period of time so the officer will get a really off reading that will make him think his laser/radar gun is a POS.

According to every independent review/article I've ever read, none of those jammers work.

I have a solo escort. It works pretty well for the most part. It cost me 200 or so and its gotten me out of a few tickets im sure. The only thing with the detectors is that a lot of cops are using laser now. Which is pretty much point and click for them. So the detector doesn't detect them until hes already got your speed. Kind of sucks, but what can you do.

I also have a Escort Passport 8500...with the cord...its not bad and has saved me plenty of tickets...more then i can remember.

Also a good radar...well for the money if you have to spend....is a K-40 radar i don't have the exact specs on it but i've heard its one of the best. It's built into the car with 2 detectors one in the back of the car and the other in the front with a lazer jammer added to it. Thats about all i kno about it, Blue04Redline had it on his old car so you can ask him for the specs on it.

They could ask me, but I could just give them the site, becuase mine was even old and outdated. The cool thing about K40 is that some, if not all of their detectors come with a guaruntee that if you get a ticket with thier system, they will pay for it, as long as it was a speeding ticket. I was intrigued by the K-40 and have been checking it out since mentioned earlier in this thread... for front and rear protection, including the laser jammer, with the LEDs (rather than the pods), we're talking about roughly $1000 for the hardware/sales tax, and 8 hours labor for the install (at approx $60/hr). I found a local vendor that is offering at 12% discount... so the whole shebang (hardware/installed/sales taxes) would come to roughly $1300.

It's a great system, from what I can see, but it is expensive.

Blue04RedLine,
Does/did K-40 offer hardware flash upgrades to keep the hardware up-to-date?

Thanks,
jm

I have a BEL Pro RX65, which i just got only about 2 weeks ago. So far it has been great to me. I love it on the highway when i take a long trip. I think it retailed for ~$330, but i got it for $250 off ebay (new in the box too!). I guess the V1 used to be the best thing (and i WAS intending on buying it), but i guess they haven't kept up with everyone else lately.

That's a good question. When i had mine there were no updates available to my knowledge. When I said mine was old, I only meant that it was like 3 years old or so, and outdated becuase the same model type now comes with the laser jammer. It works amazing, and honeslty, once built in, even people in VA would probably be able to use them. When I traded my car in, it was funny because no one at the dealer had any idea what the two flashing/beeping things were when they turned on the car. And yes, it is expensive, but probably one of, if not the best you can buy.

Some magazine did a review on it, can't remember which, and said they needed over 3 miles of track to get out of it's range so they could test it's effectivness. I can attest to that range also, as I picked up signals over 2 miles away in certain areas.
