Redline Problems

I am taking my car in for service on thursday (Feb. 3, 2005) and am trying to get documentation of any and all problems that people have been experiencing with Redlines. Especially, but not limited to, engine codes (particularly system running rich, as i cannot find where someone had this code in relation to the camshaft sensor), instances of the trunk scatching the rear bumper, rotor gouging, hard start when cold, any engine noises, hesitation when accelerating, any lack of power, windows leaking, or any instances of the car stalling when driving.

Please only post here with relevant information as i'm going to bring in a copy of this thread when i go in.

Remember, ANY problems you've had, no matter how major or minor they were, this could also prove to be very usefull to new users/owners that find their way here. Thanks,

Tom

the trunk will be everyone it just a poor deisgn

I threw a code but that was my fault not realizing the filter fell off my Ghette(Smith) intake system

The Cam postion sensor is one I have seen a few times along with that gasket.

Hard starts as well every other day it seems.
Bad problems...

My car started with trouble starting, which I found odd for a car with 45 miles on it when I got home. Next, the car shut off on me twice at 6,000 Rpms, the second time it wouldn't start for about 5 min. I took the car in on Saturday, on Moday they said it needed a new cam sensor and a ECU update. I just got off the phone with them now, and they said they aren't sure what's wrong with it. They claim to have the 'Field Manager' out there testing the car. So I got transferred to the salesman and told him that I need a new car or my money back. I'll be calling when I get off work to determine which course of action I will be taking. Not a good start to a new car...

The stock cat blew out the tailpipe with only 200 miles on the car, I have noticed hesitation at 2000RPM's in 2nd gear when cold numerous times, and the front rotors were gouged the day I bought it.

04 RL no start at 2001 miles; adjusted cam position sensor. 2853 - trunk scratching bumper, cold engine hesitation first 2 minutes, rear door window trim keeps popping out, radio locked up channel and volume, marks in spoiler, headlight assembly replaced; sealant visible inside of lens. 3504 - no cold start towed in. sat there 7 days waiting for new calibration. 3927 - no crank issue; replaced ignition switch. 4040 - no cold start towed in again. so much for calibration at 3504 miles. still in shop after 5 days.

Is this car a remake of the '59 Edsel?

is this car a clone of Fords '59 Edsel?

Can someone tell me how your trunk is scratching your bumper? Not that I don't believe anyone, but how the hell?? What is up with the Cam Position Sensor deal??? At least I'm not seeing this thread flooding with replys yet...

Had my Redline since September 04 have put 8900 miles no problems so far, hopefully no problem arise since I put about 24-28k per year on my cars depending on the year I will be out of warranty in less than 2 years.

Trunklid bottoms out on bumper when closing; causing a line of scratches across bumper. Needs to be realigned.

There is a TSB on cam sensor; out of adjustment from factory, causing engine timing to be off a bit. This causes long crank times when starting. Check www.saturnfans.com for more info.
Blown Valve Gasket - heard a loud noise backing out of the garage, oil leak, was a blown valve gasket, replaced

Starting Problems - when the valve gasket was replaced, the cam shaft sensor was not aligned EXACTLY so another valve gasket was ordered, put-on and the sensor was aligned exactly, starts fine and better than it ever has
for about a month, the fuel gauge wasn't accurate. it would say that i had fuel, went thru it fast & was out of fuel, & then read what i assume was accurate. that resolved it's self.

the cruise control sometimes just won't work. it takes restarting the engine.
I had the camshaft sensor problem about two months after i bought the car with about 2000 miles on it. The car would crank but with no engine turnover.
vita,
I dont have as many problems as t8sgolf but I've had my share. Day one roof lining near rear brake light fell down. I travel alot in it so it has 16000+ miles on my 04 and my Saturn mech. said I'm pretty much going to be the guinea pig for problems. After every long trip(800+ miles) it will not start or start and not rev past 1000 rpms. Every cold moring the same problem as the long trip. The Saturn mech has replace the cat that had a leak and talked about having to do something with downloading from a disc 12 to help the cam's timing or something. I dont know. He showed me the paper from corporate Saturn and it said all 04 RL will have this problem but they still dont have the specs to correct it. He will call me when he's got them but said what I have will have to do.
cold engine hesitation first 2 minutes
LMFAO thats not a problem, thats normal for every car I have ever driven that had any sort of power in it at all
Well, here's an update. I just got the car back from Saturn, it had the Cam Position Sensor replaced, and the ECM was updated with new calibrations. Took it and drove it easy for about 20-30 min, then started getting on it pretty good. Couldn't really get a good run through the until just now on the way home finally. I gotta say that it runs smoother than it did when I test drove it, the car starts instantly on the first crank. Haven't got a chance to test that when it was cold yet though. There is in fact 2 service bulletins for the Redline, one on the Cam Sensor as a few people have indicated, and one for the ECM calibration as well. The tech was nice enough to give me a printed copy of the Cam Sensor TSB which defines the problem and is what the Saturn techs reference during service. It has pretty pictures! I would suggest that anyone that has these problems described above should at least call Saturn. The ECM update is available, and takes very little time to update. The Cam Sensor took less than a day AFTER the part got there. If anyone is interested I can post the exact name and number of the TSB for the Cam Sensor. Hope this helps out.

that would be great if you could
I forgot the paper at home, I'm at work right now. I'll post it as soon as I get home. The specific symptoms were 'Extended cranking in excess of 3 seconds, and excess cranking with no start', but I'll get the specifics online at about 6:00 pm Chicago time.

I have extended crank like everyone, my rotors are gouging heavily, bumper scratching, had a moaning noise from driver seatbelt which had to be replaced, severly annoying chirping from the back seat, pulls to the left, molding in rear by passenger door seperated from veh by about 3 inches, small water leak once during heavy rain from front left lower speaker, rattle from the front map light assembly, and runs rough first few seconds when very cold.

But I'm not picky or anything......
What's up with the brake gouging? Bad pads or something? Also, what are we talking about when we say 'rotor gouging'? This is a term I would usually use when the pads are shot and the rivets/backing is metal to metal with the rotor.

What I mean is severe lines cut into the rotors that would normally be associated with heavy braking after the pads are worn down. However, in my case the pads are in great shape but there are heavy lines cut into the rotors already. They are not out of round yet and I know I am braking hard a lot, but I just thought I wuld mention it in case several poeple are noticing it. When I have to reface my rotors I am going to have to cut deep to get a smooth surface which will limit the number of times I can cut them before they are out of specs. The cuts in the rotors seem excessive to me for a veh with only 8500 miles. Is this what everyone else is talking about?
Service Bulletin

Here is the info for the Cam Sensor TSB. It says for 2004 Ions, but applies to the '05's as well.

Document ID #1543045

Title:
Engine Cranks with No Start or Engine has Extended Crank(Greater than 3 Seconds) Before Starting (Verify Timing of Camshaft Position Trigger and Adjust, If Necessary) #04-06-01-026 - (Aug 9, 2004)

Condition:
Some customers may comment on no start or extended crank (greater than 3 seconds) before start condition.

Cause:
The camshaft position trigger may not be properly timed to the camshaft.

Correction:
Verify the timing of the camshaft position trigger and adjust if necessary.

It then goes on to describe the exact repair procedure. It's full of oilly fingerprints and crap even. So there ya go, hope someone can use this.
