Well I watched 6 or 7 cars pile up around my Redline today; amazingly my car was directly in the center and didn't even get touched. I don't know what angel was with me, but holy crap.
It was about 3:45, I was going from my home in Hartland to the Wal Mart in Howell to get stuff to make my dad's birthday cake, going west on M59 about 55 mph (there was fairly thick traffic.)
To start things off, a girl 2 cars ahead of me locked up her brakes to avoid hitting the car stopped at the light in front of her; she ended up hitting that car. The Explorer behind her locked up its brakes, slid into that girl. I nailed my brakes and they hauled me down FAST but there were still cars coming at me, so by the time I was almost stopped, I just sort of slowly moved onto the shoulder, about to the bumper of the Explorer.
Then the Saturn SL behind me locked up HIS brakes, the lady behind him in a silver Dodge Dakota followed suit; the Dakota bumped into the SL. However, the jackass in the Mercedes SUV behind her didn't have enough time, and made a dive for the lane to the left of him (into oncoming traffic). What happened next was ridiculous - I watched it all happen, saw all these cars just flying around:
There was a red Trailblazer coming the other way at about 45-50 at the same time Mercedes ass flew into her lane; she swerved, he clipped her back bumper. Trailblazer lady (with her 3 year old daughter in the back seat) tried to get back on track and stop, but skidded, hitting the Dakota in the driver's side rear, and then to hit the girl in the Metro head on, then spun around, and her Blazer tipped over on top of the Metro.
With all of the collisions done, I turned off the Redline, RAN full tilt back to the worst part (the Blazer & the Metro), and see the lady in the Trailblazer standing in her car, and the girl in the Metro bails out of her car, screaming and crying. She said she was ok, but she was holding her neck, so I told her to stay there. The lady in the Trailblazer was unbuckling her daughter, and a former fire fighter was right behind the Metro - he pulled the little girl out of the Blazer's moonroof, handed her to her mom, and went straight for the poor girl in the Metro. He held her head there while I was calling the cops.
5-10 minutes later, 3 state troopers, a fire engine, 2 firefighters in their own cars, and an ambulance showed up. The guy in the Mercedes, who I thought was gone, walked up just then and was like "Is everybody OK? That was crazy!"
Flash back to 20 minutes earlier, when I'd been on the interstate, and a silver Mercedes SUV nearly rear-ended me then flew into the fast lane to pass. SAME GUY. I immediately recognized him - reddish shirt, green hat. So I UNLOADED. "You should be thanking god nobody's dead" this and "way to fucking go, what the **** is wrong with you" that, "You need to watch how you drive". Then one of the Troopers told me to calm down, pulled me over by his cruiser, and I told him the whole thing, because I was the only one who watched exactly what happened.
Everybody seems to be fine; the girl in the Metro went to the hospital, and her fiance showed up a few minutes later. The lady in the Trailblazer's husband showed up, and the kid in the Saturn behind me and the Dakota lady were just sort of watching.
Phew, that's the end of my story.
