Hey guys I've been at this for over 7 months now and have poured more money into my 04 ion redline than I can stand. I have posted before about it but never could get anything then what has been tried. The issue is that when I am turning right (only right) it makes a grinding noise and it kind of sounds like its hitting something to create a tick like it would if you put a card in the spokes of a bike. This noise increases, not only necessarily with speed but with RPMs as well. The second I turn left it stops. Oh and it also sounds like it is coming from the drivers side front wheel well. I have replaced both wheel bearings, the drivers side cv axle, checked rotors and brakes, even replaced the swaybar because I finally gave up and brought it to and dealer and they said the stops on mine were worn and it was moving when I turned, so 500 dollars later guess what? It still made the noise. Anyone have any suggestions? I am really at a loss here and would love to start upgrading my car but don't want to until this stops. Also once this noise reached its full it hasn't gotten any worse within the past 4 months of regular driving.

Very odd, miles? I wonder What your im shaft bearing is like... So if this issue increases with rpm will it do it in neutral revving the engine?

Alright I just went out and checked and no it does not do it in neutral, so it is only while I am actually moving and 126k. The only reason I mention rpm is because if I'm in first around 3k it is plenty loud while turning and as soon as I shift it isn't nearly as loud. Its really weird and it doesn't seem to be getting any worse so its not huge issue but it just bugs the living hell outta me that I can't figure it out. And correct me if I am wrong but isn't the im shaft part of the drivers side cv axle? If so then its been changed.

Intermediate shaft is in the middle on its own. Theres a bracket its attached to that has a bearing in it, thats what Recaro86 is referring to. You might need to post a video of this so we can eliminate some things.

I'm thinking it's more engine related after you saying that, load on engine while turning I'd look at engine mounts man

okay, if I can get my hands on a video camera ill try to do that, as far as the intermediate shaft goes where in the middle is it? Because that has been said before but I never could quite locate it and for the engine mounts that could be something because back when we replaced the clutch they were looking pretty worn, anyone know where I could find some for my car?

Also how might the engine mount cause this? it seems weird that it would do it in only one direction.

**okay so I dont think it is the intermediate shaft because from what I can tell that should cause steering issues and a clunky feel to the steering which isn't my case I can turn and move the steering wheel just fine, it's only one I turn to the right that this noise begins

So I saw another post from a while back and I thought I might add that if I just coast into a turn the noise is still there but not nearly as bad, if I accelerate into the turn its worse (the sound is least noticeable in neutral while turning, more prominent in gear, and most while accelerating)

You're thinking of the one between the column and steering rack. We're talking about the one between the two drive shafts. Part #10357497 and bearing #12785906.

Well, that would make sense, but from what I can find its around 300-500 dollars for the part and I would hate to dump that plus another god knows what to have it put in, id try to do it myself but now that I started college and the parents moved to Florida I have no garage and little tools : /. Is there any way for me to determine that this is in fact whats causing the problem without just replacing it?

The bearing is only like $70, I doubt you need the shaft. I just gave you that number so you would know whY we were talking about.

Best way to determine what's wrong? Take it to a mechanic. Cheap way? Post a good vid of the issue and pics of the suspected failed parts so we can see the condition.

Okay well thank you for the help, I guess that bearing is next on the list lol, I have two people that were able to successfully replace the clutch when I got the car, but that was when I had a garage and tools, every mechanic that I have brought it too so far has screwed me, one said the transaxle another said the transmission and the last one, which was a dealer said the sway bar. So I am a little reluctant there, but ill see if I can get a video, if not then ill just buy the bearing and give it a go. I was able to locate the shaft, how much is needed to be removed to replace this bearing? I would assume a shop would be at least 400-600 in labor?

Okay so this is what I thought, I talked to a reputable mechanic and the part numbers that you gave me have already been replaced when I replace the cv axle, that im shaft was attached to the axle and the bearing is in the wheel hub assembly

Not to sound like an ass, but your "reputable mechanic" doesn't know what he's talking about. Either that or you didn't it explain it to him properly.

lol alright well now im really damn confused. How should I explain it? he said that the part numbers you gave me came up as an intermediate shaft that goes into the bearing which is part of the wheel bearing, I tried telling him that it is a shaft that connects the drive shafts and he didn't get that: /

, Is this a decent image to show him what I mean? and is this even the same as our car? I guess the reason he is confused is because the drivers side cv axle goes right into the transmission there, but does the passenger side go into this intermediate shaft?

Intermediate axle shafts should all be the same. One side into the diff, the other accepts a shaft that goes to a wheel hub & bearing. Unless you buy the set of axles used they never come with the intermediate drive shaft. Also the bearing that goes into the bracket is not the same as the one in the wheel hub.

Also, the # I've looked up are for 05 and up. If you have an 04 the # will be different as there is a reluctor ring on the intermediate shaft for that year.
