Stalling by revving too high

I found something interesting out about the RL tonight...when I parked my car for the night, I wanted to hear it by revving it up. So I'm holding in the clutch with the car in neutral, and rev it up, and keep revving until it hits the limiter at around 6500. I let up off the gas, so the revs fall, then the car just stalls...I did it one more time and the same thing happened. Now this is my first stick, I've driven others before, but haven't revved them up to the limiter like that, so I do not know if other manuals do the same thing. I don't know if this is a safety feature for fuel cutoff or what not, it's not in the ION manual. I'm wondering if any of you have experienced the same thing. This wouldn't be very good if I were taking the car to the limit in 5th gear...hitting the red line and speed governer to where the car will just stall while going over 140mph...
When I take it to the dealership, I don't know if I want to ask them about it because they might mark it down as me abusing it and try to void some warranties in the future, so I'll consult you guys that would know about this.

The rev limiter is a fuel and spark retarder and actually cuts fuel and spark at redline...if it was hit really quick, it can stall the car, especially since in neutral there's no load on the engine - when driving, if you hit the rev limiter, it'll stay running since even though fuel and spark were cut for a second, you're still rolling down the road with the ignition on - just like push-starting the car.

If it happens while driving, and the car actually turns off, then you might have an issue, doing it neutral isn't a good indicator though. If I give mine a good hard rev and let it drop, it always falls a bit low, so if you bounce off the limiter I could see it shutting off, since it drops a little low to begin with, plus you get the fuel cut off and spark retarded at the same time.
i noticed an interesting fault in the cruise control yesterday.

I was wondering if you pushed the clutch while in cruise control mode if the curise would disengague like one would expect?

Nope it rev'd up 3000 rpms (quick spike) then disengagued
This one, and the last stick I drove did the same thing with the cruise control. 2001 SC2. Not sure if it hit 3k, but it would spike for a second and then turn off.
Redlines can hit the rev limiter at 6500 when sitting still?

most cars have a cut off at 4 or 5 when sitting still.

Yeah, mine went all the way up there. When I did it, I kind of slowly made it up to the red line, and slowly let off, but it still cut off the spark and fuel and ended up stalling.

Yes it will but not recommended at idle, with no load freereving can cause some damage even on a built engine.

it happend to me.. 2007 rl stg 2 full trottle in 3 around 170kmh and its stall for 15 min.. wasn't able to restart by letting the clutch go or restarting it... no code to the ecu.. i think that the spark is to weak for the boost and gas at 7000 rpm.. i was looking stupid on freeway but still destroy an audi..

hahahahaa :bangin:
this would happen a lot on other car boards i've been on....the mods are nice here, by now they'd stick something insulting in about the person who dug up the thread then lock it lol
Yea yea old thread. I would never free rev my ion because its my DD. But my race quad on the sand drags ill put it on the rev limiter and drop the clutch and hold on tight...
holy shit this is an old thread!!!

i cant rev my car in neutral to 7k, (not a good idea anyway) but it will hit limp.

odd.
