Marcus Crebo here from Saturn of Peoria, IL ...

On October 17, 2004 Saturn of Peoria commissioned me to take one of our Redline ION demo's to a test & tune event at Cordova Dragway Park. As you would expect the Redline transported us flawlessly to and from the track.

Once at the track I unloaded all the misc. travel items, but made sure to leave all factory components such as the spare tire for an accurate representation of street weight.

After the standard tech. inspection I pulled a number of quarter mile passes. The ET's started out at a lack-luster [email protected] That first run included a 2.591 60 ft. time with wheel spin galore as I got used to the ION's dynamics. Eventually I was able to hone that ET down to a [email protected] with my best 60ft of the day at 2.212 seconds. Along the way the ION pulled off a number of 14.6's, 14.7's and 14.8's! Considering GM reported a [email protected], I was impressed to say the least.

For the record the quickest runs were with normal tire pressures. Lower tire pressures did not help tire spin much and the top end mph. suffered. All runs were completed using 93 octane fuel from a local gas station and absolutely no modifications were put in place.

I will try to get a copy of the best time slip uploaded soon, but until then I'll list off the numbers.
.589 - R/T
2.212 - 60'
6.217 - 330
9.449 - 1/8
75.91 - MPH
12.215 - 1000
14.544 -1/4
96.31 - MPH

So the Redline's can run...Go get 'em.

that's good to hear, so far you've got the best time out there for our baby! and the time would be better with a better 60' too, although that isn't bad!

good job!

Aren't you the guy who's normally a DSM driver? I was wondering when someone would post these times on this board ;)

Glad to see it was an official run too, with the spare! That really rocks :)

out of curiosity, how many miles were on the car?

what did you launch at?

i was just wondering the milage because you said it was from a dealer. that being said, i thought it "might" have been in the break in period, which would mean some more time could be shaved off that.

but again, what was your launching technique/rpm?

SRT guys, when you break 13's with a stock car, is that with stock rubber (as i hear it's better on the RL). just a thought

I've seen Esssss Arrrrrrr Teeee 4's break 13's with stock everything, including rubber. I didn't have enough seat time to tell you how well an srt-4 launches, but it sure is fun to drive. The rubber on the RL isn't that bad, but hell you can still easily spin the crap out of them when not trying...

that's good to know, i was just wondering if the Essss Arrrrrr Teeeee 4's (lol) that broke 13's were running something better.

and about easily spinning the crap out of the RL's rubber, you're telling me, almost every morning i get some spin/hop when getting on the freeway (it's uphill). not to mention how much you have to baby it in the rain or around turns (come on LSD!)

The rain issue isn't even funny. I live in Phoenix Arizona, so I will probably see ran less than a dozen times a year. But last week we got some rain and holy shit this thing sucks in the rain, lol. Talk about violent wheel hop and tire spin. I pretty much shifted to 2nd gear at 2 to 3k rpm's just so I could accelerate. Anything over a quarter gas and you were screwed... Luckily it will rarely ever see wet conditions.

BTW, if it had the same bolt pattern as my SC2 I would mount my drag radials to it. Too bad it doesn't...

No word on the launch RPM used? I'm interested too since I'm thinking that the DSM driver w/ his AWD is probably used to high RPM clutch dumps...

As to the SRT-4, it's got more torque and power but you gotta admit running 14.5 bone stock is alot better than running 15.1 or whatever SCC managed to pull... not to mention it means at least now it's more of a driver's race. Sure, the advantage to straight line races is still to the srt-4's favor but the gap is narrowing :-D

The best launch RPM ended up being right around 1500RPM. Any more than that caused too much wheel spin and wheel hop. Going straight from idle was basicly a stall. The slightly above idle take off made the most use of the power and traction available.

I love launching AWD's at redline, but there is as much variation in launching as there are car styles. I tried everything possible to get the RL to hook up. No water box or burn out, water box with basic burn out, water box with E-brake draging-tire shreading burn out. It all came down to the water box with a basic burn out to heat the tires and the 1500RPM city driving style launch.

Any other questions just let me know.

BTW - A month earlier I was able to get my FWD 1990 DSM down to [email protected] with a boost controller, 2.5" press bent cat back and 110 octane fuel. Prior to the 110 octane that DSM would only pull a 14.8, but I've got plenty of practice launching FWD.

Wow.
That's alot like launching the spec v :)

I expected you probably had a good amount of experience with dragging, I was just saying that given your experience you usually tend to start there and work your way to the desired launch.

Did you try any second gear launches at all?

I ran a 13.8 @ 101mph on stock everything in my 2004 SRT4. That included stock tire pressure NO weight reductions, stock off the show room floor!
I have seen a best of 13.6 in the SRT4 stock but most good drivers are in the 13.7-13.9 range on average.

The BIGGEST downfall is our skinny ass stock tires though I still can cut 2.0 60 foots on them I wish I had a nice 7 inch wide rim as opposed to the stock 6 incher.

Hope that helps, and it is nice to see the Redline running mid 14's I hope to see the slip and MORE people repoduce those numbers!!
