Ouch! I just ordered a tach, I hope this get's answered before I get it.
I have an Autometer 5" tach with shift light installed and it works just fine. Since we have a COP (coil on plug) installation, no spark plug wires, I had to use the Autometer tach adaptor. The Autometer tach is very responsive and the shift light works great. The stock factory tach is sluggish compared to the Autometer and is not real accurate in realtime readings.
I wish some of yall lived near me...ima automotive n00b pretty much....wish I had pretty little mods like yall :(

Can I pick up the tach adapter at PepBoys or Autozone or do I have to order it from Autometer?
adapter and coil

where can i get the coil and adapter, do you need both? How much were they? Where did you get them from?
The tach adaptor can be bought from Summit or Jegs. I don't know what "coil" you are talking about.
no coil?

so all you used was a tach adaptor to install your tach and shiftlight? thats it? how much was it?
I bought everything from Summit. The part number for the Autometer tach adaptor is ATM-9117 and sells for $79.95. I don't know if Autozone or Pep Boys sell the adaptor. I don't frequent those stores. I have the Phantom series tach and gauges. The tach adaptor is all I needed to get my new tach w/shift light working. I have it mounted under the left headlight pod assembly. There is a nice out-of-the-way place to mount it there. There are just four wires to hook up up. Works just fine. I tinted the bulb in the tach and the boost gauge red.
Pep Boys by has shit... some of it looks kinds nice, but the main selling point is how it looks. Total garbage. Same with AutoZone. We have a place here called Car Boutique that has some nice stuff, but the dumbest hours I've ever seen. The close at 6:00pm almost everyday and aren't open at all on Sunday. What the hell? When do the people that can afford the stuff they sell actually shop there? This is in Chicago even, if you work 9-5 towards or in the city, there is no way in hell to get there in time!

I find it hard to read the stock Tach... I am thinking a shit light will be enough with a trained ear to shift with. Anyone have a favorite Shift-light kit they like?
:)
